Botanical description

The golden mustache flower is a liana-like herb with two types of shoots: some are erect and fleshy, from 80 cm to 2 m long, covered with normally developed, almost linear alternate leaves up to 25 cm long; the latter are horizontal, with poorly developed leaves. When a golden whisker leaf plate, which is very similar to a corn leaf, breaks, you can see how thin threads of rubber stretch between the scraps. Cranked horizontal whiskers with young rosettes at the ends extend from the stems, with which the golden whisker reproduces. The flowers of the fragrant callisia are fragrant, small, collected in hanging inflorescences, however, at home, flowering occurs infrequently.

Growing a golden mustache at home

Growing conditions

Fragrant callis is not just an ornamental houseplant. The beneficial properties of the golden mustache have been known for a long time, and many would like to have this medicinal plant in their home. How to grow a golden mustache on a windowsill? Quite simple, since the plant is unpretentious to the conditions of maintenance and undemanding to care. However, there are some subtleties of growing a golden mustache that you need to know.

In the photo: Useful plant golden mustache

If you need a golden mustache as a medicinal plant, you need to place it indoors so that direct sunlight falls on it in the morning, before 12 noon. From the midday and evening sun, the leaves of callisia curl, discolor, the plant ceases to form a mustache and loses its medicinal properties. Over time, you will need establish a support and tie the stems of callisia to it.

The optimum temperature for keeping a golden mustache is 25-27 ˚C during the growing season and 12-15 ˚C in the winter. The golden mustache needs a constant flow of fresh air, but the plant does not like drafts. In summer, it is better to keep the pot with callisia on the balcony or terrace.

Watering and feeding

Water the plant in moderation, but regularly with settled water at room temperature, and sometimes it is better to skip watering than to make the roots of the plant soak in liquid mud. The winter watering regime depends on the room in which the golden mustache spends a dormant period: if the plant is in the recommended conditions (12-15 ˚C), then watering should be reduced, but if there is callisia in a room with operating heating devices and dry air, humidification of the substrate in a pot with a plant, it is carried out, as in the summer, in addition, you will have to wash the leaves of callisia several times a week or spray them with warm water.

Feeding a golden mustache is optional, but if for some reason it develops too slowly, apply complex fertilizer in a low concentration to the substrate. Top dressing should contain all the main elements: potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen.

Young plants of fragrant callis are transplanted annually, and adults - once every 2-3 years. It is better to do this in the spring, at the beginning of the growing season. The substrate for the plant is prepared with approximately the following composition: coarse sand, compost and leafy earth in equal parts. The optimum pH of soil for a golden whisker is pH 5.0-5.5.

In the photo: How a golden mustache blooms

First, a layer of drainage material is placed in the pot, which should take up at least a quarter of the volume. Then the plant is transferred into the container and immersed to such a depth that the surface of the substrate is 2 cm below the first leaf. The remaining space is filled with a substrate, which, after planting, is slightly compacted and watered, and when the soil settles, you can add more soil mixture to the pot.

You can propagate a golden mustache by seeds or vegetatively: cuttings, layering or pieces of mustache. It is best to do vegetative propagation in March or April, but if necessary, you can do it at other times.

Cut off the top of the shoot with several internodes from an adult plant, remove the lower leaves, and shorten the plates of the upper leaves by a third of the length. Let the cuttings dry for a few hours, then plant the tops in pots of damp substrate, spray them with a spray bottle and cover with a transparent hood to create a humid environment for the cuttings.

You can separate a rosette of leaves with a small piece of stem from the lateral horizontal shoot and plant it in a vessel with water. Within two weeks, a powerful root system will develop at the outlet, and it can be planted in a pot with wet soil.

Outdoor cultivation

You can also grow a golden mustache in the garden. It is necessary to cut off a fragrant mustache from a home callisia, put them in water, and after about a month, when they grow roots, they are planted in a garden bed in soil fertilized with superphosphate and wood ash. If you take good care of the golden mustache in the open field, then in one season you can get up to three harvests of this medicinal plant.

Pests and diseases of the golden mustache

Diseases and their treatment

Usually, problems with fragrant callis at home arise not from infection with harmful microorganisms, but from improper maintenance or poor care.

  • Yellow spots on the leaves can signal improper feeding of the golden mustache, and in the future, the processes can grind, and the leaves fade.
  • If the tips of the leaves begin to dry and brown spots appear on the plates, this may be due to a lack of moisture, sunburn, or a lack of nutrients in the substrate.
  • Rotting lower leaves of a plant are a sign of chronic waterlogging of the soil in a pot or a low temperature in the room.
  • And insufficient lighting delays the production of the enzyme, which is why the golden mustache is so valuable: leaves with medicinal properties must have a purple hue, and for this the plant needs a lot of light.

Try to find the perfect balance of light and moisture for the scented callis, and then the symptoms of ill health will disappear on their own.

Pests and the fight against them

The golden mustache flower needs high humidity, and if you provide the plant with this condition, no pests will settle on it. But in a room with dry air, fragrant callis can fall prey to thrips and spider mites, which feed on its cell sap.

Prevention of sucking pests consists in regularly spraying and washing the leaves of the plant with a damp sponge or under a warm shower, but if the pests do appear, try to deal with them with a folk remedy: tobacco infusion with the addition of laundry soap.

In cases where sparing measures do not help, you will have to spray the golden mustache with Aktellik or Fitoverm and, to enhance the effect of the insecticide, cover the pot with the plant for several days with a transparent plastic bag.

Golden root in the garden

It turns out that you can grow this wonderful and useful plant in your garden. Despite the fact that its natural environment is distant mountain corners, the golden root will take root well in the summer cottage. You just need to create suitable conditions for him.

Planting and leaving

Let's choose an open and sunny place for it. The soil should be sufficiently loose and fertile. Several stones need to be buried in it and a root should be planted among them, but you should not bury it deeply - part of the rhizome should protrude above the surface. Litter from the coniferous forest can be added to the soil.

Rhodiola pink among stones

It should be remembered that under our usual conditions, that is, at a low altitude, the golden root blooms early - in the spring, and then its shoots begin to fade gradually, and the plant loses its decorative effect. Therefore, you need to think about how and with what to disguise it. It is not worth planting the golden root in a conspicuous place, or you need to place a plant next to it, which will later close it.

The most suitable place would be in a rockery or on an alpine slide, among stones and other similar plants. On my site, the golden root grows next to other "natives" from Gorny Altai - a fern kochedzhnik, a badan, a red brush (Rhodiola four-part).

Rhodiola rosea among other plants

Rhodiola requires almost no maintenance. Where it naturally grows, it often rains, and the plants themselves are almost in the water - among the stones on the banks of mountain rivers and streams. Therefore, it is advisable to water it often in the garden, especially in dry times, preferably by sprinkling.

Reproduction of the golden root

You can divide the golden root at any time, but it is better after flowering. For this, a part of the rhizome with two or three buds is cut off, the cut is slightly dried, then planted in a new place.

Seed propagation is also possible, but there are some difficulties. The seeds of the golden root must be stratified. To do this, they must be sown in a box in late autumn, sprinkled with a thin layer of sand and buried in the area, covered with a film on top. Also, stratification is carried out in the refrigerator, sowing in a bowl, or wrapping it in a damp cloth. It will take a month and a half to keep them there.

The seeds prepared in this way are then germinated indoors at a temperature of +18. + 20 ° C. It is better to leave the emerging seedlings in the box, as they grow slowly, especially in the first year. And after a year or two, young plants can be planted in a permanent place.

Legumes in horticulture are represented by three types:

anagirolist bean or bean-liana - the tree grows up to 7 meters high, has a trunk with a smooth greenish-brown bark. The crown is narrow, irregular in shape. In a young tree, the shoots grow straight, upward, but growing up, with the appearance of leaves, they go down, hang down like vines. The leaves are very interesting, they are painted in two colors: dark green, and on the back side - gray, velvety. The shape resembles an ellipse.

The most common decorative forms:

  • Weeping bean - differs in drooping branches
  • Golden bean - decorated with golden leaves, which turn green when ripe
  • Bobovnik autumn - pleases with repeated flowering
  • The oakleaf bean leaves have the shape of an oak leaf.

Decorative bean trees can serve as a hedge in your garden, decorate an arch. Hanging lianas decorate ponds and ponds, and can be easily shaped in the bonsai style. It goes well in group plantings: they look harmoniously with spireas, scarlet.
