Spring is the best time to prune cherries. This culture can be formed by analogy with a tree or in the form of a bush. In any case, thinning and removal of dry branches is necessary. In addition, by pruning, you can give the old cherry youth and extend its life on your site.
Cherry differs from other fruit and berry crops in its great capriciousness:
In any of the three cases, a lot of "empty" shoots are formed on the cherry, that is, without buds at all, with a small number of them, or with buds, but dead ones that will not wake up in spring. And only when the tree wakes up, you can accurately determine which branches are alive and which need to be cut.
For an inexperienced and inattentive gardener, pruning cherries is best done during bud break
I listened to the recommendations: prune trees before budding. On the apple tree and the pear everything went well. The trees blossomed and delighted in the summer harvest. But the opposite happened to the cherry. I cut out all the unnecessary, in my opinion, branches so that the crown was sparse and beautiful. And when the leaves and buds began to appear, I saw that almost half of the left branches were dry, the buds on them did not wake up. As a result, the already rare cherries had to be cut off again. Almost nothing is left of my cherries.
Only a keen and experienced eye can recognize viable ones among the numerous still dormant branches. You will not break every twig, look to see if the bark has wrinkled, or pick it everywhere to determine if there is a green layer there. Therefore, I now do pruning of cherries at the beginning of budding, when it is already clearly visible which branches have overwintered and are ready to grow. And I also agree with the opinion that sometimes it is enough to remove dry branches, which are always in abundance on it, to prune cherries. The crown will become less thickened, it remains only to correct it a little. If you take my experience into service, then do the pruning carefully so as not to damage the already swollen buds: remove the pruned branches from the crown carefully, and cut the large and clumsy ones into pieces.
Spring cherry pruning can be divided into:
Moreover, it is necessary to carry out pruning in exactly this sequence, since after cutting out dry shoots, there is often no need for thinning. And the crown has to be formed from what is left, that is, from healthy and well-located branches.
After waiting for the buds to start blooming, you will clearly see what needs to be removed as part of sanitary pruning:
There are many bare branches on the cherry, they need to be cut
Such unproductive shoots can grow long and hang down; cut them whole from the trunk
If branches get in the way, shorten them
Thinning pruning is more difficult because it has more rules. Cut branches:
This cherry has many branches growing down
The branch above the pruner is directed towards the inside of the crown
Branches located close to the ground, as a rule, do not produce crops, or the berries on them get sick (rot)
Two branches grow in the same plane and already touch the tops, it is better to remove the curve, with fewer lateral growths
If you are shortening a branch, then make a cut above the bud located on the outside, stepping back 0.5–1 cm from it. Then the branch will continue to grow outward, not inward. This rule is true for all trees, but the cherry has a nuance: not all of its buds are growth and shoots, so if possible, make a cut not over the bud, but over an existing branch.
Shorten the cherry branches by cutting above the branch, and if not, then above the outer bud
When removing the entire branch, cut it into a ring. To do this, firmly press the pruning shears blades to the trunk, do not indent from it.
Cutting technique on the ring: the blades are pressed against the trunk
If you leave a stump, then whole bouquets of shoots will begin to grow from its base. This is how tops are formed, that is, fattening branches. They are always directed vertically, often compete with the conductor and strongly thicken the crown. It turns out that by incorrect cropping, you add work to yourself - you also remove numerous tops.
Tops have grown on an old cherry
On an old cherry, tops are more likely a plus. You can cut down your old branch, and leave one of the young shoots to replace it. This pruning is called rejuvenating.
Cover all sections thicker than 1 cm with pitch, paint or garden mastic.
Cherries are formed up to 5-6 years of age, since many main branches coming from the trunk will have to be cut. On older trees, they are already thick, the wounds will be significant. This will lead to gum flow, fungal diseases, decreased yield and other troubles up to death.
What an adult tree cherry should look like:
An approximate diagram of the formation of a tree cherry
It takes about five years to form such a tree. Every year the tree grows taller, branches grow on it, from which the next tier can be formed. The task of spring pruning is to create or maintain this shape of the tree.
For lateral branching by 1 / 4–1 / 3, shorten only powerful annual growths with a length of at least 40–50 cm. On such strong shoots, there are both growth and fruit buds. On short growths, there is only one growth bud - at the very top. If you shorten such a shoot, then it will bear fruit and die off. There will be no longitudinal growth or lateral branching. Annual growths differ from perennial branches in the color of the bark. It is brighter and brighter.
The length of the annual growth is the distance from the top of the shoot to the place where the bark changes color to a paler, matte
Cherry, which gives root shoots, is usually formed in the form of a bush. It can consist of 2-3 trunks, with or without a stem. Each trunk is formed according to the principle of a tree, but there should be 8-10 main (skeletal) branches. There will be fewer tiers, because bush cherries are lower than tree ones.
I love to shape my cherries in a bushy way. First of all, I raise my hand with a pruner and cut off all the tops at the height to which I reach. I don't need berries that I can't pick without a ladder or tilting the trunk. Then I do sanitary and thinning pruning as described above. Each bush I have consists of three trunks. If one is outdated, then I grow a new one from the growth to replace it.
An old, long-formed cherry in the spring, in addition to thinning and sanitary pruning, also needs a rejuvenating one. After about 10-15 years of fruiting, the yield decreases, the branches give short growths, the trunks are covered with lichens and cracks. So it's time to do a rejuvenating pruning. It is very easy to rejuvenate bush cherries. Saw out the old stem, and leave a new one from the undergrowth to replace it. You can generally cut off the entire bush at ground level, leaving the root suckers, and grow new cherries from them. With tree varieties that do not give growth, everything is more complicated. There are several ways:
If you cut off the top, the cherry will begin to actively overgrow with young twigs.
From well-located tops, you can form not only new skeletal branches, but also the trunk
The branch is shortened to a well-positioned lateral branch
The main type of annual pruning of cherries in the spring is the removal of dry branches. The next most laborious operation is thinning. Try to cut the branches to a lateral branch. Only shorten strong annual growth rates. A young tree also needs a formative pruning, and an old one needs a rejuvenating one.

Pruning is one of the mandatory steps in caring for berry bushes. But each type of horticultural crops differs from each other in a number of features. Therefore, it is important to know how to prune blackberries in the spring correctly so as not to harm the plant.
Among the qualities that attract gardeners to cherries is early ripening. This culture grows rapidly and bears fruit. But such an advantage turns into a minus - cherries are losing productivity no less rapidly. This rapidly aging tree needs regular pruning - if you ignore it, the cherry dies ahead of time. Spring Pruning Goals:
Novice gardeners are interested in how to prune each specific tree, because the methods differ depending not only on the species, but also on the variety. For example, when pruning walnuts, mulberries and grapes, only dried shoots that interfere with growth are most often removed. Each vine requires active and painstaking attention. The pruning of stone fruits (cherries, cherries, apricots) begins with fruiting specimens in order to have time before the awakening of stone buds, which wake up earlier than vegetative ones.
One-year-old growths (last year's shoots) must be pruned every year or at least every other year. By combining tenderloin and pruning, you can achieve a neat and firm crown. In the process of pruning growths, moderation is needed, otherwise young trees will lose fruitfulness in the formation of unnecessary skeletal branches that drown out fruit branches. It is also fraught with the fact that for the next season the gardener will have to tinker more with pruning unnecessary branches, fearing that they will thicken the crown and reduce the tolerance of cold weather.
It should be remembered that intensive pruning is only necessary if it is necessary to loosen individual branches that begin to compete with the conductors or can potentially interfere with other smaller branches. Do not prune branches that have regained a horizontal position after the garter; pruning should also be avoided in cases where it concerns powerful intermediate branches that are in a horizontal position. If you do not follow these rules, then the gardener will absolutely unreasonably delay the appearance of fruits on the cut branches and reduce their number.
Pruning of such representatives of the garden's flora as pears and apple trees should be started in mid-spring, trying to be in time before the juice begins to circulate. If the growth from last year reaches half a meter and looks healthy, then this is good and you don't need to touch anything. If they barely reached the 18-20 cm mark, then you need to start by looking for a problem that affects the general condition of the plant. For example, this could be caused by branches that extend from the trunk of a tree at sharp angles. Remember that the tree should have one top, and feel free to eliminate them.
Skeletal branches, in the case of overtaking each other in growth, can become a potential problem in the future, so they should be cut in tiers. Calculate so that one tier is 16 cm lower than the previous one. When finished with pruning, switch to one-year-old shoots, they need to be cut by about a third of the length so that there are no difficulties with branching in the future.
A special approach is required for those trees that form a crown in the form of a pyramid. When pruning, try not to touch the topmost bud, most often on the outside. If the tree is spreading, then, on the contrary, a bud is left from the inner side. The powerful branches of the pyramidal tree are directed outward when pruned. Those branches that grow at an acute angle are eliminated almost at the base; in extreme cases, leave 20 cm shoots under the "stump".
As a rule, spring pruning of blackberries begins almost immediately after the snow melts, when the minimum positive temperature (+5 degrees) is established during the day and the plant begins to wake up slowly.
By the way! It is believed that pruning is much more convenient to carry out after the buds open and small leaves appear, because you can immediately understand which shoots are frozen and should be subjected to sanitary pruning, and which should not be touched.
Now for the approximate dates when you can start pruning blackberries in the spring in the regions:
In the South, it is March-early April.
In the Middle Lane (Moscow region) - the second half of April - early May.
In the Urals and Siberia - from early to mid-May. Around the same time, blackberries are cut in the North-West (in the Leningrad region).
The standard pruning scheme in spring is used for mature tree-like plants that have already entered the fruiting period. The main goals of pruning are to increase yields, crown formation and sanitary thinning.
If the tree is more than 3 m in height, you need to cut off the tops of the skeletal branches, the plant will stop developing in the vertical direction, but will more actively release side branches.
To prune trees in garden plots, use the following tool:
The pruning tool must be clean, serviceable and sharp so as not to unnecessarily injure the tree.
To remove thick branches with a diameter of more than three centimeters, you must use a saw, not a pruner.
Pruning shears when pruning such branches will unnecessarily squeeze the branch and damage the bark.
