Long gone are the days when every square meter of land in a garden or summer cottage was used for growing potatoes, vegetables, berries and fruits.

Now every owner of a country house wants to decorate the surrounding area: create original multi-tiered flower beds and flower beds, build a rocky wall or alpine hill, dig a small decorative pond ...

In the past season, various rockeries were considered the most fashionable, representing a garden of stones, very unobtrusively and harmoniously complemented by plants that recreate a picture of a mountain landscape.

Gardeners very often confuse rockeries with alpine slides or simply identify them. But this is absolutely not true.

If the main thing on an alpine slide is still plants, then in rockeries - all the accents are made on the beauty and arrangement of stones. Plants here serve only as a background, an unobtrusive addition to the overall composition.

In addition, an alpine slide, as a rule, is a multi-tiered, voluminous structure. A rockery for the most part is a flat, rocky garden, which is arranged on a flat open area.

The space between the stones is covered with gravel, coarse sand, artificial stones and other bulk materials. And finally, single plants are planted, which should emphasize the beauty of the stone composition.

In this article, we will tell you in detail how to make a beautiful and uncomplicated rockery yourself on your site.

Types of rockeries

There are several types of vegetable and stone garden, which can have different styles of execution:

  • Mini rockery is perfect for decorating small areas, apartments, private houses. If you don't have your own garden, bring a piece of it into your home. For this, a bowl or container with soil is used, where succulents and other vegetation are planted. Voids and open spaces are filled with stone chips or gravel.
  • On the slope. The natural embankment has an alpine flavor. Stones for the organization of the slope are selected large, natural form. You can lay them in terraces or steps, and fill the gaps with ground cover plants.
  • With a pond. The composition reflects the rocky seaside. This is a great choice for decorating a pond in the garden, room for imagination. Stones can be laid in the form of a terrace that descends to the water, a mountain slope, a plateau. Plants for the coastal zone are selected for moisture-loving, the rest can be covered with the most suitable plantings for rocky slopes.
  • From conifers. Looks spectacular at the front door in front of the building facade. A circular flower bed, consisting of stones, conifers, mounds of colored pebbles and rubble. The lifespan of the stone is not limited, and conifers grow very slowly. Therefore, you will enjoy the created beauty for many years.

Rockeries styles

When creating a rocky garden, you need to take care of the necessary materials (large stones, boulders of the original shape), and also think over what vegetation will most effectively complement the rockery.

Depending on the flora that will prevail in the composition, rockeries are also subdivided into several styles:

  • You can create a Japanese rockery from moderately bright perennials with your own hands at the dacha, focusing on the proposed schemes and photos, using a step-by-step guide. When decorating a flower garden, pots are placed in an original way, in which exotic flowers are planted. The composition is complemented by tables of an original form, Buddhist statues, cages with singing birds. The exotic atmosphere is conducive to relaxation, conducive to a good rest.
  • When creating an English rockery, evergreen conifers are necessarily planted, which are supplemented with decorative wormwood, cereals. In this style, the sunny side for plants may not be necessary, but you should not hide rockeries in the shade either.
  • European rockeries involve planting wild plants with different flowering periods. You can choose flowering perennials, low shrubs with bright leaves. An important condition when choosing plants for planting is their ability to adapt to the climatic conditions of the European space.

Succulents are a huge group of very different plants. These succulent plants are able to use moisture for a long time, which they store in their tissues for future use. They supply themselves with it during periods of temporary drought. This is important for us, since there is no need for regular watering. Succulents are some of the most suitable plants for mini landscapes. They have an original appearance and are distinguished by their resilience. By the way, cacti are also considered succulents, so the phrase "cacti and other succulents" is absolutely correct.

In mini-landscapes, there is the possibility of selective watering of specific succulents or other plants. For example, it is possible not to water the ground under lithops and other "living stones" for a long time. Or moisten the soil under them at different times. There are no problems with feeding succulents. I use a liquid concentrate called Cactus & Other Succulent Fertilizers. This fertilizer is produced by various domestic and foreign companies. The ease of caring for indoor compositions with succulents is due to the fact that it becomes possible to immediately inspect several plants.

Many cacti get along well with other succulents. I have tephrocactus articulatus in many compositions, or rather, its papery variety. It looks unusual and impressive, easy to care for and multiplies quickly. The article "A cactus with paper needles, or a papery variety of tephrocactus articulatus" was dedicated to this inhabitant of the highlands.

Compositions with succulents can be supplemented with other plants. It is important that they look good together, have similar living conditions, or some other benefit of being planted together.

In order for the succulents in the compositions not to become a victim, the conditions for caring for them must be observed. Be sure to place the bowl in a bright and cool enough place. Moreover, the requirements for some succulents may be special.
