Helichrysum

Features

The helichrysum, whose scientific name is “Helichrysum italicum L.”, is part of the Asteraceae (Composite) family.

It is a shrubby plant that comes from the southern area of the old continent and is characterized by being typical of the Mediterranean scrub to which it manages to give all its characteristic scent.

Helichrysum is a plant that is frequently exploited in perfumery, but which is also appreciated for its remarkable therapeutic properties.

Helichrysum is a perennial plant that has the particular characteristic of being completely covered by a thick whitish hair that also has a characteristic aroma.

The stems, on the other hand, can reach a height of thirty centimeters, without branches.

The leaves have a lanceolate shape, while the flowers are extremely small, with a characteristic pale yellow color.

Flowering corresponds, in most cases, to the whole summer season.

Cultivation

The helichrysum is a thermophilic plant and, for this reason, it prefers the warm temperate climates found in the Mediterranean basin and is, in any case, extremely suitable also to develop in temperate environments, as long as they are adequately sheltered from the cold.

The best exposures are those areas where the sun beats continuously and directly.

The preferred soils for growing the helichrysum they are stony, sandy, arid, calcareous, particularly drained and well drained ones.

The helichrysum, on the other hand, does not particularly like compact soils, due to the fact that it greatly fears the formation of water stagnation.

The helichrysum can be multiplied by seed and vegetatively by taking it from the cuttings, which are rooted at the end of the summer season in a substrate formed by sand, peat and cultivated soil.

Active principles

The composition of the helichrysum is decidedly complex: in fact, the main components are represented by flavonoids, essential oil, tannins, caffeic acid and another full-bodied handful of substances, among which we can mention sandstone, to which a particular antihepatotoxic property is attributed.

Property

Helichrysum is a plant that is capable of exhibiting various therapeutic properties.

First of all, we can emphasize the sweat properties of this plant, without forgetting those astringent, sedative, anti-asthmatic, bechice, stimulating blood circulation.

For external use this particular plant is used as an anti-neuralgic soothing.

Helichrysum is a plant able to promote and support the removal of bronchial catarrh, but also to reduce the excesses of asthma and inflammations that have an allergic nature of the nasal mucosa.

A good number of recent studies have explained how this plant is also extremely useful for carrying out an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action.

Furthermore, let's not forget how beneficial the effects that the helichrysum has against headaches and migraines, but also to combat cases of arthritis and acute rheumatic forms, were considered beneficial.

Use

All the medicinal properties that are attributed to the plant of helichrysum they are an excellent support in case you are affected by different ailments, both for internal and external use.

The infusion of the flowering tops of helichrysum, when taken internally, allows it to carry out a beneficial action in all cases of skin diseases, such as eczema, especially psoriasis, for which balneotherapy can also be integrated with its decoction.

The internal use of helichrysum essentially takes the form of infusions and syrups and can be extremely useful as an adjuvant, in whooping cough, in subacute and chronic bronchitis.

For all those cases in which you intend to cure and treat inflammation, edema and other ailments, you can use specific ointments that are made precisely based on helichrysum, which are really useful for the reduction of pain, itching or burning caused by such situations.

Specific ointments, in most cases, should be complemented by an internal treatment that is able to work on the various causes of the disorder.

It should also be emphasized that the extremely intense flavor of the helichrysum is not pleasant for everyone and this could represent a problem in the intake of the infusion.

Local external use is able to fight psiorasis and eczema and can also be performed by decoction, which can be exploited for ablutions of the parts affected by the disorder.

Often, we can also find various shower gel products based on helichrysum on the market, so that, during the shower (or better still when taking a bath), an excellent contemporary beneficial effect can be obtained, thanks to the double action of 'helichrysum on the skin and respiratory system.

Finally, the essential oil of helichrysum can be usefully exploited with St. John's wort or calendula oil, in such a way as to be able to enhance its beneficial action in relation to the disorder that you want to cure.

Helichrysum: Meaning

In the language of flowers, the helichrysum represents the desire to be remembered and remembered by others; In addition to this meaning, others consider the flower the symbol of exile but it is still not possible to know the origins of this belief.

According to ancient legends, it is said that a young man was forced to abandon his woman to face the war and as a parting gift he gave her a bouquet of helichryses. The flowers, saddened by the young woman and her unhappy love, asked to survive as a sign of the young man's love and to allow the woman to enjoy their beautiful sight in memory of her lover.

Hence, the flower as a symbol of remembrance.

Lavender bags. lavender bags, lavender favors

O.K. so it’s only the end of February, and perhaps we’re being a bit over optimistic, but it’s 18 degrees Celsius today, and after the icy wind, snow and ice (the horrible freezing wind, the snow, and the ice) that has imprisoned Serena, myself (Geoff) and five crazy cats within our little house for days on end, it’s time to stretch your legs (stretch our legs), do some exercise (do some exercise), and breathe some fresh air (and breath a bit of fresh air). Well what better way to do that than with one of my favorite hobbies: gardening (gardening).

I've always found gardening a very creative and therapeutic pastime. In fact when we lived in the city and had really stressful jobs it was my garden and vegetable garden (garden and vegetable plot) which kept me reasonably sane, whilst at the same time supplying us with lovely fresh produce throughout most of the year. Living here in Lunigiana, immersed in the green of nature (immersed in the green of nature) has undoubtedly had an impact on my attitude to gardening. Firstly, the rhythm of life here is completely different, things play out on a human scale (in a more natural and gentle way), and although there is occasional stress I no longer depend upon my garden to keep me sane. Secondly, fresh, reasonably priced local produce is very easy to come by, although of course there’s nothing quite like filling a basket with tomatoes or eggplant hand picked from your own vegetable garden.

I’ve certainly had plenty of time during these wintery weeks to contemplate the small garden in front of our house (the little garden in front of our house), and I'm ready for action! Directly outside the French doors of our kitchen is a terrace in piagne (a flagstone terrace) and, surrounding that on two sides, a sunny piece of land. About four years ago, knowing that this little south facing area would be subject to some quite extreme temperatures, I began to experiment with a few typical Mediterranean plants (typical Mediterranean plants): Rosemary (Rosemary), Sage (Sage), thyme (Thyme), Santolina Marittima (Silver Ragwort), Cineraria (Lavender Cotton), Helichrysum (Helichrysum, or Curry Plant), Oleander (Oleander), and so on. These plants are all able to resist the hard winters that we can experience up here at 500 meters in the foothills of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines mountains, but also the scorching hot sun (lion sun) and Drought (drought) of July and August.

The garden was developing well, until it became apparent that 'Mr Romarino is Mrs Sage' (Mr Rosemary and Mrs Sage) had visions of grandeur, and were planning a coup. Those two little plants, which I had rescued from the almost certain oblivion of my mother in laws balcony, began their new lives as the first tenacious occupants of my new garden. Then suddenly one morning four years later, I look out of the window to find myself confronted with a pair of monstrous threatening bugs (nasty monstrous menacing plants). It's funny how things creep up on you like that!

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not the typical English gardener who fusses around with flower beds (flower beds - allegedly the hardest word for an non Italian to pronounce correctly, although I always seem to have more trouble with planes - aeroplanes) and gnome endowed English lawns (lawns). I like my gardens (and wives) to have something wild (wild) about them, as the tension between order and chaos has always been very appealing to me. But those pesky Mediterranean herbs were moving things too far towards the latter for my liking. I know there and then (there and then) I decided on a radical pruning and transplanting campaign (a radical campaign of pruning and transplanting)
